Ongar Museum &
Ongar Millennium History Society
The Ongar Millennium History Society (OMHS), a voluntary organisation dedicated to raising public awareness of Ongar’s rich past, opened a small museum within Budworth Hall in April 2024. Located inside this unique Victorian landmark, the museum features an illustrated timeline of key historical events in the town, alongside a cabinet displaying local artifacts. The museum is currently open on Wednesday mornings from 11 am to 1 pm (subject to volunteer staffing), and visits can also be arranged by appointment via email at ongarmillenniumhistorysociety@gmail.com or through their website, www.omhs.org.uk.
Formed from a history project in 2000, the OMHS has continuously worked to preserve and share the history of this ancient market town. Their notable achievements include undertaking extensive research, publishing the well-received book ‘Aspects of the History of Ongar‘, and establishing a self-guided Town Walk marked by special paving stones. The society has also produced informational booklets, created historical altar kneelers for St Martin’s Church, and actively archived historical photographs, books, maps, and artifacts. If you’re interested in local history, a wealth of information is available in the society’s newsletters accessible via their website. The OMHS continues to encourage others to use their skills and interests to help keep Ongar’s history alive for future generations.
New members are always welcome! Membership provides numerous benefits, including detailed quarterly newsletters covering sponsored events and talks. Each Christmas, members are invited to a free substantial lunch featuring quizzes and historical displays. The current annual membership fee is £16 for a single membership or £30 for a couple.
